June 7th, Introductions

For each assignment I will post the date, a reminder of the reading and a sentence or two for you to consider. Again if you are late posting POST ON THE CURRENT DATE, DO NOT GO BACK, just let us all know you are catching up with a note on which assignment your are answering.

So who are you? Share what you are comfortable with, as much or as little. Tell a story, share your dreams or maybe your confusions. You can tell the story you have told a hundred times or you can change your story. Maybe the real question is who do you feel you are not who you think others believe you to be.

Thank you for being in this class and for being willing to explore the books we will share.

  1. My name is Chase Lampley. I have been married for 11 years and have 3 children: 9,8,and 3. Typically, the little free time I have is spent hanging out with the family, coaching my kids in sports, or doing what daughter calls 'my projects.' Most of my hobbies consist of something outdoors: hunting, fishing, sports, etc.
My road to being an art teacher was not the easiest, though. Originally, out of high school I wanted to go to school to be an art teacher. But life seemed to take me on a different journey. I had the opportunity when I was 21 to go work in Hawaii for a few months as a plumbing contractor. While there, I was asked to stay as a superintendent for a remodeling company. It meant dropping out of school, but also meant living in Hawaii for the year and a half. When the project was complete, I can home. I went back to finish school, but felt led to finish my degree in business. I then worked as an investment consultant for 6 years. Throughout that 6 years, the desire to teach never went away. At the height of my career in that field, I decided to walk away and get certified to teach art. Not a popular choice in my house at the time, but couldn't be happier.
I just finished my 4th year teaching at Aledo High School, where I taught Art 1, Art 2, Photography and AP Photography. I am taking a new position at Southwest Christian School in Fort Worth. It is a good move for me and overall good move for my family. Thy have and incredible fine arts program and I am really excited to be a part of it. I will also get the chance to coach football and baseball. The MAE program has been great for me as teacher and as an artist. It has really revived my passion for making art. I am exited about this course in particular, because I believe "Identity" will be the theme for my capstone project. I need to dial it in little more, but I have some good ideas...

  3. Hello All,

My name is Roberto Becerra, I am from Harlingen, Tx almost as far south of Texas as you can go. I am a graduate Architecture student taking the course as a general elective. I am very passionate about art and reading and have recently been introduced to expression-ate writing so felt this course would be fun. I recieved my undergrad at Tech and just finished my last semester there in Lubbock as a Graduate student. I am currently in San Antonio doing my residency which I will complete and graduate in December of this year. I have studied Business Management and actually was in my senior year of studies when I realized that is not what I loved and needed a career where I would be able to express myself and make a difference in this world. So I left everything and everyone I knew (just a suitcase of clothes and a small 13in TV) and set out on this journey to be an Architect. I have never been happier, and everything in life seems to be falling right into place. My future goals include getting licensed as an Architect which should take anywhere from 2 to 3 years as there are 3740 working hours required and a licensing exam that consists of 6 exams. Second goal consists of eventually going back to school in 3 to 5 years to pursue my Phd and eventually teach and inspire at a University level. So that is me, I have had so many obstacles to overcome but embrace each one as I would not or could not be where I am without any of these obstacles. Thank You I look forward to the course and getting to know each one of you.

  5. I am Corina Carmona, and I am wrapping up my first year in the Fine Arts Doctoral Program at TTU. I graduated from the MAE program in 2016, and I had taught high school art for ten years in my hometown in south Texas. My home is the Rio Grande Valley, my husband and I live a few minutes from the border, but I am in Lubbock working on my degree. We will celebrate nine years being married next month, and more than half the time we have been married has been long distance! We do not have children, but we have rented my nieces for outings and trips on occasion. Having rent-a-kids is the best!
I got my BFA in studio art specializing in painting, so I am more of a 2D artist. I am a muralista, but I also love printmaking and a little graphic design. I am a Chicana, and I am passionate about reproductive justice, especially in Texas.

  6. Hi All,

My name is Sylvia and I too recently completed my first year in the Fine Arts Doctoral Program at TTU. I live on the outskirts of Lubbock and have a little dog who is my best friend! My background is in fine art--specifically conceptual art practice, so my studio praxis is rather diverse. Most recently I have been making participatory, socially engaged work in the form of installations and artists books; these works culminate from my research interests in theoretical design (ethical design).

I grew up mostly in Iowa, but have moved around quite a bit as an adult. I completed my MFA in 2016 in Boston (MA), and have really enjoyed living in Lubbock's comparatively rural environment since then. When I was deciding whether to go for a PhD it came down to my desire to be a scholar/artist. What I mean is that I was starting to feel like there was far too much guesswork going on in my research, which hindered the development of my work. I just didn't feel like I had the tools to do the work that needed to be done. Alas, here I am!

  7. Greeting Classmates, I am Deepika Dhiman, from INDIA, here I am doing Ph.D. in fine art concentration with visual arts, and just completed my first year. since childhood I was attracted to things that had a certain visual appeal attached to them or crafts, which were designed in an unusual manner. I knew from my early days, my inclination towards art would invariably guide me towards studying it further and defining a career for myself in it. My first ‘Guru’ was my mother who is a teacher by profession. She taught me the importance of imbibing a constant hunger for learning as she is the view that life is a perpetual learning journey. She is my best critique and played an essential role while I was growing up as she trained me in embroidery and stitching cloth. Till this day, her critique of my work helps me to develop my art and evolve as an artist.

I completed Bachelors in Fine Arts in 2002, in Painting and Printmaking from the College of Art, New Delhi, INDIA. After pursuing my undergraduate studies, I studied Animation and Multimedia whilst working as an interior designer. After the completion of the animation course, I joined Ishir Infotech Pvt. Ltd. as a graphic artist, and within a year of joining I promoted as team lead. I led a team of 20 people for next 4 years. During this time, I closely worked with the art director to understand casino industry in great detail, and as a part of core management team, I had to coordinate tasks involving game developer, mathematician and animation teams.  I got the opportunity to work for reputed clients like R.Franco, Atronics Gaming, Octavian International, WMS, Magic Dreams, Boss Media, Win Systems and Bally Wulff. I was directly involved in the development of more than 150 games in a span of 4.5 years.

Whilst working, I frequently presented and exhibited my artwork at various prominent art exhibitions. My work has been showcased in numerous national and international exhibitions across the US and in countries including India, Italy, and Indonesia among many others.

After attaining significant work exposure, I pursued M.F.A. program from Ohio University School of Art, Athens, OHIO in Painting and Drawing. The graduate program helped me to understand how my style of art was deeply inspired and associated with my culture and country.  My thesis project, “India bound – Between” focused on the language of metaphor and material, form, and relationships and posed questions around cultural collision, gender issues, and personal identity. The prime emphasis of my work was to communicate issues surrounding pain, violence and complex relationships between people, family and the cultural restrictions and norms that surround them. Through my artwork, I intended to examine the nature and role of women in Indian society and to communicate the feeling of restrictiveness that certain limitations, traditions, and rules still impose on that gender which continues to generate inequality.

I am also the recipient of prestigious “Junior research fellowship” from Ministry of Culture Govt. of India 2014 for sculptural series called “India Bound - Between”. Thereafter, I Joined short-term photography course in 2014 from Sri Aurobindo Centre for Arts & Communication, New Delhi to give new a direction to my art. Along with my teacher and renowned photographer, Idris Ahmed I formed a photography group named ‘PhotoCommune’.

As for my Ph.D. research, teaching, and curatorial work within the realm of women issues, race and sexuality specifically related to India, and visual culture. As I have closely covered issues regarding Rapes in India and also pertinent issues related to women like domestic violence, dowry, girl child etc., blur line between rape and sex, also underline darker side of politics of sex through Kamasutra, understanding phycology of male mind behind the crime, third gender and issues, lesbianism issue/rules changes in India, diversity of culture and impact on women.

  8. Hello All.

My name is Karla, I was born in El Paso, Tx but raised in Juarez (Mexico). I'm a graduate architecture student with a certificate in healthcare, so our main focus is designing hospitals and clinics. I decided to do the healthcare certificate because I believe architecture has a great impact on people and this is a way of helping and giving back to the community. I am taking this class as an elective. I've always been interested in art so I'm really looking forward to this course. I am very passionate in everything I do. One of the things I enjoy the most are animals, reading and sports, specially karate. I have a black belt and used to teach back in El Paso.

Some of my goals in life are to gain enough knowledge in my field and use that knowledge to find a way of helping people that needs it the most, to graduate since I am the first person to go to college in my family, to adopt a child someday and to travel as much as I can because learning about other cultures is fascinating. So this is just a brief summary of me, I am looking forward to learn from each of you!
